Mining in BC – the build, the boom and the meteoric rise of BC’s fortunes

With 800 mining companies calling Vancouver home, mining is big business in BC. Far from being an “old-school” business, the increased adoption of green technologies is invigorating demand for mining products, and demographic turn over is creating incredible career opportunities. Over the last few years, mining has grown to be the largest private sector employer in northern Canada, and the single largest employer of aboriginal people. So what do the changing global realities, innovative technologies and renewed investment in mining mean to BC’s economy and the talent needed to keep BC at the forefront of economic success? Join Cascadia Prosperity Forum as we present Michael McPhie, President & CEO, Mining Association of British Columbia, to discuss the state of the mining industry in BC. Mr. McPhie will discuss what the opportunities are, our place in global markets and how mining is leading Vancouver to greater business strength and prosperity.

About Michael McPhie:
Since his appointment as President and CEO of the Mining Association of British Columbia in December 2004, Michael has represented senior companies involved in our $10 billion mining and smelting industry. Currently completing his Ph.D. at the University of British Columbia in mineral economics and sustainability, Michael is also a member of the Board of Governors of British Columbia Institute of Technology, a Director of the Canadian Mineral Industry Human Resources Council, Vice Chairman of the Britannia Beach Historical Society, was a founding board member of Geoscience BC and serves on the board of several public companies. He is also an active supporter of a number of charitable service organizations including the Vancouver Children’s Hospital. Michael was voted one of Vancouver’s Top 40 under 40 by Business in Vancouver magazine in 2004.
